The name of the Jilava town is derived from a Romanian word which is of Slavic origin. The word means humid place. The town also has a fort which was built by the Romanian King Carol I. Later on the fort was turned into a prison. The prison is the place where on November 26, 1940 the Iron Guard authorities of National Legionary State massacred more than 50 political convicts. The killing was done to take out revenge of the prior killings of the chief Corneliu Zelea Codreanu. This prison was also the place of the imprisonment for various political leaders following the start of the country’s Communist rule.
